environmentally minded.
To ensure a comfortable internal environment within the buildings of my scheme, the implementation of a number of strategies were necessary. As good design practice & to provide my scheme with longevity within the changing environmental climate, I implemented green strategies were possible.
AIR QUALITY.
DAYLIGHTING STRATEGY.
RAINWATER HARVESTING.

The size of the housing units makes it possible to passively ventilate them, however the communal building needs additional assistance to create a comfortable internal environment. With the wind patterns of Manchester & the positioning of it on site, it was possible to utilise the skylight as a means of aiding the passive ventilation of the building through the activation of a stack chimney effect.

By positioning apertures on both sides of the sky light, the air speed is increased as it is forced through the openings of the sky light creating a pressure differential & increasing air fow
With the obstruction of Stretford Public Hall, a large glazed facade was situated on the south-west elevation of the communal building to allow maximum daylight to permeate into the social spaces, creating a light airy atmosphere.

The implementation of a rainwater harvesting system is a simple but effective means of aiding the self substance of my scheme, particularly in Manchester's climate where rainfall is roughly 80mm per month.
