Materiality matters.
There were a number of aspects I took into consideration when approaching the materiality of my scheme. Most importantly, I felt that it was important to create a material connection with the contextual history of Stretford. The visual connection will not only help to ground my scheme within Stretford but the wider urban fabric of the city. Secondly, I identified key material qualities that I felt were necessary to ensure that the scheme was successful in achieving this.
I began my exploration into the brickwork of Manchester by understanding the immediate context of Stretford Public Hall due to its proximity to the communal space & is one of the main points of connection between Stretford & my scheme.
STRETFORD'S COLOURS.
MANCHESTER'S OFFERINGS.
I felt quite restricted by what the site's surroundings offered in terms of materiality & to make a greater connection with the city, I undertook an exploration into the brickwork of the city.
It is documented in the booklet alongside, please click the image for the full document.
CONCLUSIONS.
From my initial studies into materiality, I was able to make some key decisions. Brick will be the primary material of the scheme. it meets my requirements set out at the start of my material study & the honesty of the material creates the atmosphere of a grounded & reliable environment. Flemish Bonding; this form of bonding appealed to me the most due to its aesthetic & I feel it allows me the opportunity to experiment with varying brick colour combinations.
